- A usable audit report has four parts: scope+score, findings, prioritization, methodology. If yours is missing one, push back.
- Triage findings by severity × effort. Ship high-severity / low-effort first; queue high-severity / high-effort next; deprioritize the rest.

If you’re reading this, you probably just got a landing page audit report back — or you’re evaluating whether to commission one. Either way, the experience is the same. The first time you open a real audit, the volume is overwhelming. Twenty findings. Three score categories. A fix list with severity ratings, effort estimates, and screenshots. The instinct is to read end to end, get tired by page two, and quietly never act on it.
The point of the report is not to be read end to end. The point is to extract three to five fixes you ship next week, then return for the next batch after you’ve measured the lift. Here’s how.
The four parts of a usable audit report
Every audit worth paying for has four sections. Anything else is filler.
1. Scope and overall score
One paragraph naming the page audited, the date range of analytics reviewed, and a single overall score. The score should map to a defined methodology — in our reports, that’s the AQS Trust Score, computed across Clarity (25%), Friction (25%), Distraction (20%), Urgency (15%), Proof (15%). A score without a methodology behind it is a vibe. Walk away from those.

2. Findings — page elements diagnosed individually
The bulk of the report. Each finding should be tied to a specific element on the page (above the fold, the form, the CTA, the proof block, etc.) and answer three questions: what is broken, why does it cost conversion, and how is it fixed. Generic findings (“your CTA could be stronger”) are the single most common form of audit padding. Walk away from those too.
3. Prioritization
The triage section. Without it, you have a list, not a plan. The auditor should rank findings by likely revenue impact and implementation effort, then call out the top three changes to ship first. If your report doesn’t do this, you’re going to spend two weeks debating which fix to start with — which is exactly the stall this article exists to prevent.
4. Methodology
How the score was computed, which framework was used, and what’s reproducible. Methodology is what lets you re-score the same page after the fixes ship and prove the lift. Without it, you can’t demonstrate ROI on the audit itself, and the work feels speculative even when it isn’t.
How to triage 20 findings into 3 fixes
Lay every finding into a 2×2 matrix of severity and effort. The matrix takes 15 minutes and prevents the most common post-audit failure: trying to ship everything at once and shipping nothing.
Most reports surface 15–30 findings. After triage, you should have 3–5 fixes for week one, two or three for week two-or-three, and a handful in the parking lot you may never ship. That ratio is normal. Resist the urge to attack everything — you want to be able to attribute the lift to specific changes.
Four red flags in the report itself
Sometimes the audit you paid for is the problem, not the page. These four signals tell you the work was templated rather than diagnostic:
“Your CTA could be stronger” without saying which CTA, where it sits on the page, what specifically is weak about it, or what to change it to. Templated audits live here.
If every finding looks equal, the report can’t be triaged. You’ll spend the next month debating which finding to tackle first instead of shipping anything.
Knowing the form abandons at field three matters far less than knowing it abandons because the phone field arrives before the visitor has decided you’re worth their phone number. Without the cause, you can’t generalize the lesson.
If the audit doesn’t explain how the score was computed, you can’t re-score the page after fixes ship — which means you can’t prove ROI on the work, and the next audit will start from zero.
When to push back on a finding
A good audit assumes the auditor was right. A great audit assumes they might not be. Sometimes a finding is technically correct but contextually wrong for your business. Knowing how to push back keeps you from shipping changes that lower conversion to satisfy a report.
Three patterns where pushing back is reasonable:
- The finding is at odds with your own data. The auditor flagged your form as too long, but your conversion rate on the form is 8% — well above category benchmark. Either the auditor missed your data, or the form is doing more than they realized (qualifying, scoring, segmenting). Ask for the rationale, then either accept it or override with evidence.
- The fix would break a downstream process. The auditor recommends removing a phone field, but sales requires phone for qualification and your CRM workflow assumes it’s there. The trade-off isn’t on the page — it’s downstream. The right move might be to make the field optional with a higher commitment trade (free trial, demo booking) rather than removing it.
- The recommendation is a category-level best practice, not specific to your page. “Use video on the hero” is generic. “Use video on the hero because your category buyer needs to see the product in motion before trusting it” is specific. If the finding doesn’t make the page-specific case, ask for it before shipping.
The auditor isn’t a vendor; they’re an outside perspective. Treat their findings the way you’d treat any expert opinion — assume informed, push back on specifics, ship what holds up to your own scrutiny. The goal is a better page, not a perfect score against someone else’s methodology.
What to do after triage
Once you have your week-one batch identified, three rules:
- Ship the batch as a single deploy. Don’t parallel-track week-one and week-three fixes — you’ll lose the ability to attribute lift cleanly.
- Hold the page for 14 days. Then re-pull the same metrics: conversion rate, bounce rate, session duration, scroll depth. Compare against the pre-fix baseline.
- Re-score against the same methodology. If the score has moved, you have a measurable result to take to your team. If it hasn’t, the next batch needs to start with whichever fix you already know works (the highest-severity one you haven’t tried).
The audit isn’t the work — the audit is the map. Most teams stall here because they treat the report as a deliverable instead of a starting point. Don’t. The fix list is what you paid for; ship the top three this week.
